Modern managed databases have a wide variety of requirements: availability across cloud providers, as close to zero downtime as possible, automated software updates, client simplicity that hides a complex architecture. Building such a service is a obvious fit for Kubernetes and other cloud-native technologies, but the architecture of such a sophisticated system is everything but obvious.
