The CNCF Sustainability Week is an annual event organised by the CNCF Technical Advisory Group for Environmental Sustainability (TAG ENV) in collaboration with the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF). The event's main goal is to promote environmental sustainability in the cloud native industry and open source space.
Our amazing venue this time will be SustainaLab in the Matrix ONE building, located on Amsterdam Science Park (University of Amsterdam) gracefully hosting us.
We even secured a professor and a researcher as speakers, they'll unveil the secrets of sustainable AI!
We'll have a half-day full of workshops, talks and plenty of time and (open) space to connect and brainstorm on how to get better sustainability out of cloud native software.
Agenda
These are the talks in our green agenda đ
- Reducing the energy consumption of Large Language Models - Pepijn de Reus (UvA)
The rapid development in Artificial Intelligence (AI) over the past decade comes at a cost: energy consumption of digital infrastructure is soaring. With the strict targets to limit carbon emissions such that we remain underneath 1.5 degrees of global warming, this energy demand is becoming a societal issue. One prompt to ChatGPT equals one lightbulb being switched on for an hour, with millions of daily users the narrative becomes clear. So, what can we do to reduce the energy consumption of these large language models? Pepijn de Reus (UvA) will present the latest insights based on current research and his master thesis.
- Reducing the Environmental Impact of Software: A Holistic Definition beyond Just Carbon Emissions? - Alessandro (CNCF Ambassador), Flavia (Aknostic), Leonieke (Gemeente Amsterdam - City Hall), Pepijn (UvA)
The panel will dive into the various dimensions of software's environmental impact, including energy consumption, electronic waste, resource use, and the lifecycle of software products. We will also explore how software architecture, coding practices, and user behavior contribute to environmental degradation, and discuss innovative strategies for mitigating these effects.
- Hidden secrets of Datacenters - Mark Sibering (Devoteam)
Datacenters are energy-hungry, complex beasts and due to the rapid development in technology that is ever increasing. In this talk I give a brief glimpse behind the scenes.
- Get insights into your software and cloud emissions with the Kubernetes Emissions Insights Tool - Flavia Paganelli (Aknostic)
You canât improve what you can't measure. That's why we are working on this tool to empower developers and businesses by understanding and estimating the environmental impact of their cloud usage, from energy consumption to carbon emissions and the impact of hardware manufacturing. By providing insights into these metrics, Kubernetes Emissions Insights Tool enables users to make informed decisions to reduce their carbon footprint and improve sustainability in their cloud operations. By answering the boiling question, âWhat are the consequences of my software running?â we aim to help developers and businesses with reducing their environmental impact.
- Frugal Software Architects Drive Sustainability - Bas Anneveld (TechNative B.V.)
In an era where environmental sustainability is paramount, software architects have a crucial role in driving this change within the cloud-native industry. This presentation will explore how adopting frugal software architecture principles, guided by best practices from the FinOps Foundation, can lead to both cost-effective and environmentally sustainable application development.
