Talk

Learning Kubernetes by simulating blockchains

Description:

Assuring quality and documenting progress to stakeholders can be difficult for complex distributed systems.
One approach is the use of a testbed, for which Kubernetes can be leveraged to abstract away from the underlying hardware platform.

This talk will focus on the lessons learned from implementing a multi-layered blockchain and simulating it using a Kubernetes cluster.
Working from the perspective of someone new to Kubernetes, it aims to be comprehensible for newcomers.
The talk will mainly be surface level, with a short introduction to blockchains and ending with a demo of launching an interconnected multi-layer blockchain using Helm charts, sidecars, and supporting microservices.

The content will be based on a Master's Thesis in field of Distributed Systems, focused on implementing and evaluating a blockchain-based smart grid for the Danish energy sector.

Bio:

Niels received his Master's Degree in Software from Aalborg University (AAU) in the summer of 2023 and is currently employed at Trifork, working with microservice architectures.
He is a Quality Assurance enthusiast and has, during his studies, worked alongside researchers at AAU on developing tools for model-based testing.
