Backstage and Operators: Lessons Learned

Dec 8, 2021, 4:00 – 7:00 PM

In-person event

WE ARE BACK! After almost two years without an in-person meetup, we are finally back!

About this event

We are super excited to announce our first in-person event in almost two years.

Our attendees’ health and safety are our top priority as we continue to monitor COVID-19. In order to best protect everybody’s health, we will require you to show your corona passport, or a valid negative test result upon entry. We will provide hand sanitizer, and all food will be prepared in advance and served in portions along with snacks that are wrapped.
In order to access the event, you need to be on the guestlist (a successful registration) - we will check this upon entry as well.

The event will be live-streamed (or we will try). Follow this youtube link:

TALK #1:
Lessons learned writing a k8s operator by Mike Rostermund, Infrastructure Engineer at Humio a Crowdstrike Company

At the current rate of growth at Humio, we have to be smarter and more efficient at operating Humio clusters. To facilitate this, we've implemented an operator to manage Humio clusters on top of Kubernetes. The goal of the humio-operator project is to make it as easy as possible to run Humio on top of Kubernetes, not only for us, but also for our customers.

Implementing a Kubernetes Operator for a data-heavy stateful piece of software is a complicated matter with a variety of problems to solve and methods for how to solve them. This talk will touch on concrete examples of such problems and how we've decided to solve them.

Mike Rostermund is an Infrastructure Engineer at Humio. He is a maintainer of the humio-operator project, which is used by both Humio as well as customers to run and manage Humio clusters on top of Kubernetes.

TALK #2:
Enabling developers while sustaining growth with Backstage by Bjørn Sørensen, Platform Engineer at Lunar

Lunar has experienced extreme growth in the engineering organization and have been required to find solutions on how to keep engineers productive, informed and confident in all aspects of the full development cycle.

Lunar reached for CNCF sandbox project Backstage to help create a developer portal where all relevant information is collected from external sources, eg. repositories from GitHub. Common functionality is also made available through the web UI of Backstage like message reconstitution and message dead lettering. Lastly the powerful scaffolding engine is used to create new services in less than 5 minutes with everything needed to release to production.

Bjørn is a platform engineer with focus on developer experience at Lunar.

Hi is a co creator of the Lunar development platform which enables developers to deliver software continually through a GitOps based kubernetes platform fast and safe to Lunar users. Furthermore, he contributes to multiple CNCF projects such as Backstage, gRPC and Linkerd.
