Welcome to the August edition of the monthly the Bay Area Kubernetes Meetup! This meetup will be a workshop entitled “o11y workshop: An intro to running Jaeger and Prometheus with K8S workloads” ran by Kevin Crawley of Instana.
Brief overview of workshop:
The goal of this workshop is to familiarize software developers and site reliability engineers with the benefits that modern observability tools provide to the builders and curators of cloud native applications.
In this workshop attendees may following along and configure a RBAC-enabled vanilla K8S cluster in GKE, deploy Prometheus and Jaeger in support of observing and monitoring a distributed microservice application (spring-petclinic-microservices), instrument that application by introducing libraries and tooling to support capturing business metrics as well. Each attendee will configure, update, and deploy this cloud native application in their own Kubernetes cluster in GKE through CI/CD enabled by Gitlab and their integrated CI solution.
Kevin works for Instana, a managed service provider that specializes in observability and monitoring production systems, as a Developer Advocate. He has traveled the globe speaking on topics including DevOps, Docker, Observability, and Culture Transformation at conferences and such as DockerCon, SREcon, Open Source Summit EU/US, Velocity and DevOpsDays including Tokyo and Houston. He is passionate about educating engineers about the benefits of observability, distributed tracing, and control theory.
In addition to his work at Instana, Kevin is the founder and core organizer for the local Docker meetup in Nashville and was the lead organizer for DevOpsDays Nashville in 2019. He has been distinguished by his peers as a Docker Captain for his work both professionally and within the DevOps community. He has been working in software development roles almost his entire career and enjoys learning about how fellow peers are leveraging modern practices and tooling.
