Welcome to the September edition of the Bay Area Kubernetes Meetup!
5:30–6:00 Check-in & Enjoy Refreshments
6:05–6:25 Talk 1: Cloud Native Spelunking, and the True Value of Platforms
6:35 - 7:10 Talk 2: Kubernetes Ingress and Service Mesh Integration
with Envoy Proxy Control Planes
There will be two special talks presented by NetApp and Solo.io:
Speaker: Paul Burt, is a TPME working on Kubernetes at NetApp. He previously worked at CoreOS and Red Hat, and currently moderates /r/kubernetes. Paul has a knack for and demystifying infrastructure, and making gnarly, complex topics approachable. He enjoys home brewing beer, reading independent comics, and yelling at his computer when it doesn’t do what he wants.
Presentation Title: Cloud Native Spelunking, and the True Value of Platforms
About the talk:
Remember those early days of the web, when we’d FTP somewhere and upload a few HTML files? Simple and easy. Now? We have to consider serverless, Kubernetes, and the morass of containers. How do we build apps now? Where do we store artifacts? Why have we collectively accepted this increase in complexity?
In this talk we'll define the value of Cloud Native (and platforms). And, we'll share lessons we've learned as we've built NKS, a platform built on Kubernetes.
Speakers: Idit Levine, Founder and CEO and Scott Weiss, Principal Engineer from Solo.io
Presentation title: Kubernetes Ingress and Service Mesh Integration with Envoy Proxy Control Planes
About the talk:
Kubernetes users need to allow traffic to flow into and within the cluster. Treating the application traffic separately from the business logic allows new possibilities in how service-to-service traffic is served, controlled, and observed. It also provides a transition to application networking architectures like Service Mesh. In this talk, Idit will show how Solo.io leveraged Envoy Proxy and Kubernetes to build and operationalize a multi-purpose control plane to provide ingress and gateway functionality and seamlessly integrate to service meshes like Istio. Demos included to show how Solo.io's Gloo and Service Mesh Hub work in Kubernetes and Istio environments.
