Kubernetes: Strategies Around Running Java Microservices in Kubernetes

ProfitBricks GmbH - Greifswalder Str. 207, 10405 Berlin - View Map Berlin Kubernetes Meetup
Wed, Nov 15, 2017, 6:00 PM (CET)

About this event

This month we're going to dig into running Java as a microservice in Kubernetes. Special thanks to ProfitBricks, a local Berlin IaaS provider, who has offered to host us on a recurring basis.

Currently, we're looking for a second speaker for November. Please ping me over twitter (@baldwinmathew) if you'd like to volunteer. We only ask that it's not a vendor pitch :)

The meetup will be on November 15.

SPONSORED: Spin up and manage a Kubernetes cluster with Istio at AWS, GCE, GKE, DigitalOcean or Azure today!

6:00 - 7:00p Social

7:00 - 7:30p - Strategies Around Running Java Microservices in Kubernetes - David Steiman

I will cover Spring Cloud and JHipster, which we use for development, and address resourcing, limits, CI/CD pipelines, and other strategies for deploying and managing Java microservices on Kubernetes.

7:30 - 8:00p -   Automated Testing Environments with Kubernetes & Gitlab - Vladislav Supalov

Let’s see what it takes to build an automated testing/QA setup with Kubernetes and GitLab from scratch, using off-the-shelf components. The goal is to automatically deploy any feature-x or hotfix-x branch to individual environments for automated tests and to make it easier to share intermediate results within the team. This talk will touch on abstract topics like continuous delivery, the value of developer tooling and well-defined workflows, before diving deep into implementation details, learnings, gotchas and stuff-which-went-wrong.

8:00 - 8:15p - Lightning Demos

David Steiman - Since September 2016 I am a member of the JHipster core development team, focused on security and operating microservices. With over 15 years experience in web and application development, I passionate researching and build modern cloud applications, security solutions and I love to bring knowledge about open source technology to developers and to contribute back to the OS community.

With this in hand, I've got insights into today's problems around topics like designing microservices architecture. In details, how to build and operate CI and CD pipelines in various ways (Jenkins, GitLabCI), managing production environments (pure docker clouds, bare metal kubernetes, ...) and of course software topics as Spring Boot/Cloud, Angular, TDD, Scrum, etc.

Vladislav Supalov is an entrepreneur, machine learning enthusiast and DevOps geek. Currently he is building an independent solo business in the open at <a>https://vsupalov.com,</a>; focusing on Kubernetes automation for early-stage startups. Previously he has been co-founding a startup in Berlin and doing data engineering for international clients before that.
