Tech talks by Zalando, Mikkel Oscar Lyderik Larsen

1. Cloud Native Infrastructure @ Zalando
The Platform Infrastructure team at Zalando provides development tools and services to support 300+ Engineering teams with the goal of making them as productive as possible.
They use Kubernetes as a base layer for providing Cloud Native infrastructure and build a lot of services on top.
In this talk, Mikkel will give an overview of the Cloud Native Infrastructure at Zalando. Detail some of the choices made and share the learnings of going from 0 Kubernetes clusters to now supporting and operating 100+ Kubernetes clusters with a lot of automation.

2. StackSets: Simplifying application management in Kubernetes.
By default Kubernetes provides a set of resources for simple application lifecycle management in the form of services, deployments and ingresses.
While powerful concepts on their own, they are fairly low level and doesn’t provide more advanced features like blue/green deployments, traffic switching or fully automated application lifecycle.
When introducing Kubernetes to the 100s of delivery teams at Zalando it became clear that there were a need for a higher level abstraction for describing applications to solve these problems and this let to a concept called “StackSets”.
The talk will focus on the design of the “StackSet” concept and include a live demo showcasing the features.

Bio
Mikkel is a Senior Software Engineer working at Europe's leading online Fashion platform, Zalando since 2016. He works in the Platform Infrastructure team focusing on Kubernetes and AWS infrastructure and has a big interest in Continuous Delivery and automation.
