👉 Here's a sneak peek of the agenda:
18:30: Check-in and welcome 👋
19:00: 🎙️ "Kubernetes outside of the cloud: Lessons learned after 3 years" by Nadia Santalla, Senior Software Engineer @ Grafana Labs
Abstract: Kubernetes is commonly run on cloud, and even more commonly on its managed form. However, self-managing k8s on your own metal is also fun!
In this talk, I will walk through some of the challenges I've found while doing this for the last three years, and share what are the tools I've used to conquer them, such as kubeadm, cilium, metallb, stateless-dns (external-dns + powerdns), and others.
Bio: Nadia Santalla is a senior software engineer in Grafana Labs, with a knack for infrastructure. She has been running servers offering services for herself, friends, and small communities for 15 years. Nadia is very passionate about free software projects that solve real problems for people without hard dependencies on someone else's infrastructure.
In her free time, Nadia likes to read fantasy and sci-fi and play with woodworking and machine tools in her home shop.
19:30: 🎙️ "GitLab Runners at Scale as a Service" by Luis Serra, Senior DevOps Engineer @ xgeeks
Abstract: Managing multiple teams with diverse GitLab Runner requirements—ranging from different operating systems and non-containerized solutions to pipelines demanding high resources and specific tool versions—poses significant challenges. How can these needs be met while ensuring scalability, cost-effectiveness, and best practices on a cloud platform? And how can this solution be offered as an IaaS?
This talk introduces Fleeting Runners, a novel approach that leverages cloud scalability and the GitLab instance executor to transform GitLab Runner deployments. We’ll explore how Fleeting Runners simplify team onboarding into GitLab CI, allowing them to manage runners tailored to their specific needs.
By delving into practical implementation, we’ll discuss strategies for managing high and complex workloads with custom dependencies while addressing ongoing challenges. Attendees will gain insights into optimizing GitLab Runner deployments, with a focus on Fleeting Runners' capabilities, foundational architecture, and practical considerations for enhancing CI/CD workflows in diverse DevOps environments.
