• Metrics monitoring at Criteo using Prometheus and its Remote-Adapter

Bio: I (Thibault Chataîgner) joined Criteo in 2016 as SRE in the Observability team. We manage services to enable other teams to understand the state of Criteo's systems over time. Therefore one of our tasks is providing tooling to collect information/outputs such as time-series from these systems.

Presentation (french):

This talk will present feedbacks about metrics monitoring at Criteo.

We will start with a presentation of Prometheus and how we gradually adopted it since 2016. We will also see why it doesn't replace our existing Graphite as TSDB.

Then we will discuss how to get benefits of Prometheus features for metrics monitoring while using Graphite as long-term retention for metrics. At Criteo we developed an opensource bridge between the two TSDBs called graphite-remote-adapter.

In this talk, I’ll elaborate on why holistic view on cloud-native applications is indispensable, be it visibility, awareness of past, current and future issues or understanding of communication patterns.

I will also explain how machines can support humans in making improvements and operational decisions in highly complex, semi-chaotic environments.

At the end, I will demo Instana and explain how we think we can help address the holistic view challenges.
