TITLE: Debugging Services in Kubernetes With Linkerd 2

Abstract:

Kubernetes is a widely used orchestration platform, increasingly in support of microservices architectures. Developers are being tasked with managing the development, deployment, and production of services atop Kubernetes. While Kubernetes can automatically keep your service up in the event of failure or a software crash, it doesn’t provide visibility into how your service is behaving.

In this talk, we will walk through how to monitor your service on Kubernetes and troubleshoot some common issues. This will be a live demo and no previous Kubernetes experience is required.

Bio :

Thomas Rampelberg is a Software Engineer at Buoyant Inc. He has made a career of building infrastructure software that allows developers and operators to focus on what is important to them. He is focused on one of the big problems in this space: providing insight into what is happening between services, improving reliability between them and using best practices to secure the communication channels between them.

Abstract:

Over the last few years, service meshes have evolved and there has been new entrants in the space such as Istio, Envoy Proxy, Linkerd2 and more, all with rich featuresets. The goal of these all of these systems has been to make the network more transparent to applications by abstracting it away in an out of process system. As long as an application speaks common protocols (no matter the application language or runtime), it can take advantage of benefits like intelligent load balancing, circuit breaking, service discovery and more.

In this talk, we will go over the use-cases of a service mesh and introduce Envoy Proxy to describe the role it can play to help make your systems more resilient. No prior experience with Kubernetes or Service Meshes or Envoy Proxy will be assumed. Things will be explained from principles.

Bio:

Suhail is a Backend Engineer at Monzo focused on working on the core Platform. His role involves building and maintaining Monzo's infrastructure which more than 1,000 microservices and leverages key infrastructure components like Kubernetes, Envoy Proxy, Cassandra, Etcd and more. He focuses specifically in investigating deviant behaviour and ensuring services continue to work reliably in the face of a constantly shifting environment in the cloud.
