Securing and integrating legacy applications with Kubernetes and Consul Connect (Nic Jackson, HashiCorp)

Many organizations are discovering the networking complexity involved in running a microservice system. Over the last few years, many influential companies have investigated this problem, the technology that emerged is often referred to as a “service mesh.” A service mesh allows you to replace traditional host-based network security with service-based security to accommodate the highly dynamic nature of modern runtime environments.

In this talk, we will see how the open source Consul Connect and Envoy can be used to solve both network segmentation and seamless transport security with mutual TLS within your Kubernetes cluster. In addition to this, we will see how Connect can provide encrypted and authorized access to legacy applications which are running outside the cluster and potentially in a separate and isolated network.

Nic Jackson is a developer advocate at HashiCorp and the author of “Building Microservices in Go” a book which examines the best patterns and practices for building microservices with the Go programming language. Nic is also currently writing “Vault in Action,” a book which discusses operational and application security using the popular open source HashiCorp Vault, due to be published summer 2019. Observable Kubernetes with the Elastic Stack (Samir Bennacer, Elastic)
While Kubernetes can simplify application deployment in containers, its dynamic nature adds new complexity to monitoring the services and applications running in it, as well as, the health of the containers and orchestration infrastructure itself. In this talk we will show you how Elastic Stack can help.

Samir Bennacer is Senior Solutions Architect specialised in security. He is passionate about technology, and has several years of experience working with SIEM solutions and big data technologies. Crossing the chasm with cloud native (Cheryl Hung, CNCF)

In this talk, Cheryl will give an overview of the mission of Cloud Native Computing Foundation, its role in curating the building blocks of a cloud native architecture, and why it matters to you when thinking about building your own solutions.

Cheryl Hung is the Director of Ecosystem at the Cloud Native Computing Foundation. Her mission is to make end users successful and productive with cloud native technologies such as Kubernetes and Prometheus. Previously she led product and DevOps at a startup building persistent storage for containers, and worked as a backend engineer on Google Maps.
