Deployments with Kapitan (Alessandro De Maria, DeepMind Health)
Kapitan is the Open Source tool we use at DeepMind to manage our deployments to Kubernetes and to control Terraform configurations.
We will explain the basic concepts and show the workflows it enables and the benefits of using it compared to alternatives.

Alessandro De Maria works for DeepMind, where he is leading the teams responsible for Production environments of DeepMind Health.
He joined DeepMind in 2013, 6 month before it being acquired by Google.
He was part of the founding team which worked on spinning up the DeepMind Health Streams project.

Cortex: Horizontally Scalable, Highly Available Prometheus Monitoring (Tom Wilkie, Grafana Labs)
In this talk we'll present Cortex - a horizontally scalable, highly available Prometheus implementation. Like Prometheus, Cortex is a CNCF (sandbox) project.
Cortex turns a lot of the Prometheus architectural assumptions on its head, by marrying a scale-out PromQL query engine with a storage layer based on NOSQL databases such as Bigtable, DynamoDB and Cassandra. We have disaggregated the Prometheus binary into a microservices-style architecture, with separate services for query, ingest, alerting and recording rules. By designing all these services as fungible replicas, this solution can be scaled out with ease and failure of any individual replica can be dealt with gracefully.

Tom is one of the Prometheus Developers and VP Product at Grafana Labs. Previously he founded Kausal, a new company working on Prometheus & Cortex. and has worked at companies such as Weaveworks, Google, Acunu and XenSource. Kubernetes operators for fun and profit (Andrew Jefferson, Neo4j)
Kubernetes operators have many uses from performing routine operational tasks to managing stateful distributed systems. I’ll show how a basic operator can be written in go and I will share some tips that the Neo4j Cloud team learned while creating an operator to manage clustered Neo4j databases.

Andrew is a software engineer on the Neo4j Cloud team working remotely from southern Bavaria. Prior to joining Neo4j, Andrew was VP of Engineering at Tractable and wrote Application Delivery with DC/OS. Before that Andrew worked as a software engineer in a range of companies including Apple, Acunu and Spektrix. He's on Twitter as @eastlondoner.
