Talk 1: Cloud, Carbon & Cost - Is GreenFinOps the answer?

Description: ICT industry contributes about 2.1–3.9% of the total global greenhouse emissions. Though the current contribution of software to global carbon emissions is lower than other sources, it is expected to exponentially increase with the rapid growth of AI/GenAI and digital transformation. Organizations are broadening the scope of their sustainability initiatives to include software and measure its energy impact across the development, deployment, operations, and maintenance stages, but lack of granular & transparent energy & carbon data remains a challenge. What are he ways to tackle these challenges and what solutions are emerging that can address these needs effectively. Will moving to cloud alone address the challenges?

Talk 2: Shrinking your footprint with eBPF

Speaker: Dan Finneran, Principle Community Advocate at Isovalent

About the talk: The IT industry has thrived by creating a myriad of power hungry devices in order to achieve the aims of their users. Data centres around the globe are filled from floor to ceiling with these devices all manipulating data and the flow of network traffic. Over the last decade we've seen various efficiency improvements by compressing workloads on these machines through virtualisation and containerisation.Now we are starting to see the emergence of eBPF programs that are highly efficient also starting to reduce the need on additional devices within the data centre. As eBPF becomes more commonplace more and more of the processing will be offloaded to eBPF programs shrinking the footprint within the Datacentre.This talk will provide a quick overview into eBPF and then delve into areas where eBPF programs have already started to replace power hungry devices and finally where we hope to see eBPF in the future to improve sustainability in the cloud native space.

Talk 3: WRITING GREENER SOFTWARE EVEN WHEN YOU ARE STUCK ON-PREM

Speaker: Charles Humble, Freelance Techie, podcaster, editor, author and consultant, Conissaaunce Limited

About the talk: There is a real efficiency advantage in high compute density via managed cloud services. Such services, which can share resources between thousands or millions of users, can achieve extremely high hardware and energy utilisation. Because of this, an awful lot of the still rather limited publicly available material on writing software with sustainability in mind emphasises shifting to cloud services. But what happens if you can’t?In this session Charles will explain why he believes we all need to be focussed on green software. He will offer practical ways to assess where you currently are in terms of your systems, advice for how to improve, and the role code and language efficiency play. Finally, he’ll offer suggestions for how to persuade your leadership that this is all a good idea, and look at some of the tools and resources that are available to help you get to grips with this rapidly evolving and fascinating area of computing.

Talk 4: A design-led engineering approach to Sustainability

Speaker: Swati Murthy, Director – Global Sustainability Solutions, IOT and Digital Engineering, TATA Consultancy Services

About the talk: Measurements on sustainability today revolve around enterprise-level corporate, environment, social, and governance goals and reporting. There isn't a well-defined framework or industry-accepted standard for measuring and managing the most impactful sustainability outcomes across ecosystems. This is where TCS proposal to embed sustainability throughout the design process comes in. To contribute to this vision, we have defined the foundational elements, core principles, and business imperatives that can contribute to a sustainably designed world.For the CNCF Cloud Native Sustainability Week 2024 we have the pleasure to host a local meetup all centred around how to make Cloud Native Software more sustainable.
