In April 2023, in time for Kubecon Amsterdam, WG Platforms released a Platforms Definition white paper, defining cloud-native computing platforms and their value to enterprises. In Kubecon Chicago the same group launched a Platform Engineering Maturity Model to help enterprises evaluate their current state and make the most of their platforms. The model presents platform engineering as the practice used to offer an internal platform as a product through investment in all parts of building platforms and their capabilities – people, processes, policy, technology. The model also reduces the cognitive load involved in determining how to build successful platforms and platform teams.
