While the importance of data as the basis for decisions and new products is constantly increasing, traditional data warehouses (DWH) are often considered expensive and sluggish. At the same time, systems are running at their performance limits, making batchnights too short, waiting for new reports long, and handling large and semi-structured data difficult. Moving from on premise to the cloud simplifies operations and allows further scaling, but without improving functionality and at sometimes even higher costs. Technology improvements and cloud native concepts such as separation of compute and storage have created a new class of cloud DWH solutions that overcome the shortcomings of previous solutions. The most prominent representatives of this new era are Snowflake, Google BigQuery, Azure Synapse Analytics and Amazon Redshift. What is behind these solutions? What are the differences and advantages compared to moving “classic” databases to the cloud? What are the pitfalls? These questions and more will be addressed in this talk.
