Building a Green Supercomputer in the Cloud and Exploring K8s Release Management

Copenhagen

May 30, 2023, 3:00 – 6:00 PM

In-person event

Join us for an exciting meetup on May 30th! We'll hear from Leonard Pahlke, a CNCF Ambassador, about how Kubernetes sig-release manages release cycles. Then, Anders Lybecker will discuss building a green supercomputer in the cloud, with a focus on carbon reduction and sustainability. This is a great opportunity to learn from experts in the field and network with like-minded professionals. See you!

Talk 1: Version after version, how Kubernetes sig-release manages release cycles

As a member of the Kubernetes Release Team for a long time, and leading v1.26, has taught me a lot about the release process. It’s complicated, but it works! It will give you a good look at how the release team archives this difficult organization and coordination work. What do the inner workings of one of the biggest open-source projects out there look like? We will touch on that. We will also talk about how to get started contributing to the Kubernetes community.

Speaker:

Leonard Pahlke

Bio:

Leonard is a CNCF Ambassador and chair of the TAG Environmental Sustainability, previously the Kubernetes Release Lead for v1.26 and in general passionate about software, cloud, open source and sustainability related things.

Talk 2: Building a green supercomputer in the cloud

A case study implementing a carbon aware high-performance compute (HPC) cluster running wind turbine simulations for Vestas. Using the principals of green software and cloud scalability to design a solution that can to scale to 400k cores and multiple petabytes of data. Using open-source tools, UX, and data to lower carbon emissions.

Objectives:

  • Explain the principals of green software
  • Apply best practices and tools to reduce carbon reductions
  • Illustrate the financial impact of carbon emission reductions to the business
  • Select areas with large carbon impact
