Presentation 1: How To Create Highly-resilient SQL Database For Your Microservices Inside Your K8s Cluster Using CockroachDB
Come to this session to learn how to store stateful data from your microservices in an always-on, ACID-Compliant SQL database. CockroachDB can run within the same K8s cluster as your microservices; it will keep running even in the case of multiple instance failures and will auto-recover itself the same way your microservice apps do. In addition, you can even extend the cluster to other K8s clusters to keep the same state for your microservices or even make your apps resilient across regions.
In this session, you will learn how this technology works and will get a walk-through of how to setup a CockroachDB cluster in your own environment so that you can test it for yourself.
Randy Chertkow is a Principal Engineer at Cockroach Labs and has over 25 years of IT experience as an infrastructure architect for Fortune 500 companies. He has used his skills as a database developer, architect, and tools expert to implement enterprise-scale IT at companies like Abbott Laboratories, VMware, Mesosphere and more. He has a Master’s in Computer Science: Data Communications with a concentration in artificial intelligence. Besides his IT background, Randy is a musician on the side and has also written four books with major publishers about the music business.
Presentation 2: Simplifying Kubernetes Storage
Kubernetes storage can be a complex topic, especially because your storage features, architectures and operations can be dictated by your application(s) requirements. This session will review the productivity benefits of using Kubernetes to develop stateful apps, and how software engineers can leverage K8s self-service storage provisioning to speed their application development. This talk will cover a subset of K8s storage topics: K8s storage architecture options, application vs storage layer consistency, container storage interface, statefulsets, persistent volumes, dynamic volume provisioning, secondary storage features, snapshots, and portability. The presentation will also review the benefits of using a uniform local disk / NVMe architecture (across all public clouds and on-prem) to increase performance, simplify operations, and reduce costs.
Bio: Josh Bottum is a Kubeflow Community Product Manager. His Community responsibilities include assisting users to quantify Kubeflow business value, develop critical user journeys (CUJs), triage incoming user issues, prioritize feature delivery, write release announcements and deliver presentations and demonstrations of Kubeflow. Mr. Bottum is also a VP of Arrikto. Arrikto simplifies storage operations for stateful Kubernetes applications by enabling efficient local storage architectures with data durability and portability. Arrikto is a core code contributor to Kubeflow and a leading Kubernetes storage solution provider.
