Sampling remains a pivotal challenge in the realm of distributed tracing, presenting a sophisticated landscape of methodologies each with its own set of trade-offs. Understanding these nuances is critical, especially in light of varying workloads and system requirements. Beyond distributed tracing, we will also touch on the implications of sampling for logging and metrics, providing a holistic view of observability. We will delve into head-based and tail-based sampling, explore the dynamic world of adaptive sampling, and conclude with an insightful discussion on trace aggregation. Additionally, we'll illuminate the impacts of sampling strategies on logging and metrics, ensuring a well-rounded mastery of observability practices. Our goal is to enable attendees to navigate the spectrum of sampling strategies—from the foundational probabilistic head-sampling to the more intricate scalable tail-based sampling—leveraging the power of open source tools such as the OpenTelemetry Collector.
