About this event

Welcome to our second 'East Bay Cloud Native' meetup!

Bring along your colleagues/friends who might find these talks interesting and/or would like to network with folks working in Cloud Native space.

6:00: Grab a seat. Have some food and drinks.
6:30: Welcome (Sudhanshu Garg)
6:40: Talk 1 - "Eliminate Backend latency for Microservices" (Roland Lee)
7:30: Talk 2 - "Why Application-Centric Security for cloud native applications?" (Asif Awan)
8:15: Close (Sudhanshu Garg)

Folks can stay back and continue to network until 9:00pm.

Talk 1 Description: With the usage of microservices and containers in the cloud, network latency can be a primary cause of slow application response times. Additionally, most scale problems are due to inefficient database access.

In this session, we will introduce the concept of a database proxy, which provides SQL visibility and performance optimization for the developer and DBA, without any changes to your existing application-database. We will review existing solutions and introduce a new approach that is distributed and avoids network latency.

Heimdall Data is one such data proxy installed on each application server providing: 1) SQL auto-caching and auto-invalidation and 2) Intelligent SQL routing.

Speaker Bio: Roland brings over 20 years of product development experience in the application-networking industry. Roland started as a development engineer of networking products and moved to head up product management teams. Roland holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering at Cal Poly and an MBA from Columbia University.

Talk 2 Description: As the state of cloud applications, infrastructure and threats to the applications change, the traditional security measures fall short in protecting the business assets. This talk sets the context by first covering the current state of the cloud-native applications, deployment models, new and evolving infrastructure stack, and also the state of threat landscape. The talk then gets into the details of why the traditional security approaches don't work in such a context, and defines and makes the case for an application-centric approach, covers the advantages of such an approach for securing cloud-native applications, and concludes with the key things to look for while evaluating solutions based on application-centric approach.

Speaker Bio: Asif Awan is a Silicon Valley entrepreneur who's currently the Founder and CTO of Layered Insight. Layered Insight offers security and compliance solutions that cover the entire lifecycle of containerized and serverless applications. Prior to founding Layered Insight, Asif founded Plursona which was a pioneer in the Mobile Application Management space. That mobile security company was acquired by HPE. During his career spanning over two decades, Asif has held various executive and senior management roles at Aruba Networks, Motorola Mobility, Juniper Networks, Wells Fargo etc, where he lead, architected, designed and implemented various enterprise security products and solutions.
