About this event

Welcome to our eleventh 'East Bay Cloud Native' meetup!

6:00: Grab a seat. Have some food and drinks and network.
6:30: Talk 1 - Apache OpenWhisk - Open Source Serverless (Marek Sadowski)
7:30: Talk 2 - Application Modernization and Portability Across Clouds (Jagadish Mukku and Dhanashankar Venkatesan)
8:30: More networking until 9:00pm.

Talk 1 Description: Serverless has become the new style of coding, and it can be used to offload your mobile apps without incurring unnecessary costs. Get an intro into serverless/function-as-a-service/cloud functions technologies and learn why startups and enterprises are so excited about using it.

We will be demoing Swift full stack Serverless, we will be discussing solutions with Kafka and Docker, and covering:
• Who are the players in the Serverless ecosystem?
• What are some use cases for Serverless solutions - with using a Docker as the Polyglot action
• Best practices for the Serverless architecture for Message Oriented Middleware events
• Whether going Serverless is really faster, better, cheaper for developers and organizations

If you want to learn more please come and join us for this workshop!

Speaker Bio: Marek Sadowski is a full stack developer advocate, a robotics startup founder and an entrepreneur. He has about 20 year experience in consulting largest enterprises in USA, Europe, Japan, Middle East and Africa. As a graduate from the International Space University Marek pioneered in a research on VR goggles for the virtual reality system to control robots on Mars in NASA Ames. He founded a startup to deliver robotics solutions and services for industries. Marek moved to Silicon Valley to promote mobile, IoT and robotics solutions driven by AI, Blockchain, and Cloud Native.

Talk 2 Description: At this month’s meetup, we will hear from Jagadish Mukku and Dhanashankar Venkatesan from Robin.io about “Application modernization and portability across clouds”. Application portability is a growing consideration among enterprises as the array of private, public, and hybrid cloud options continue to expand. Containers are gaining favor as the best approach to application portability. In this session, Jagadish and Dhanashankar will cover Application modernization, speak about why container-based portability is beneficial, followed by a demo around portability across clouds for your stateful workloads.

Would you like to know what it takes to run Stateful applications such as Hadoop or Oracle RAC on Kubernetes? Are you trying to backup your Kubernetes-based databases to the Cloud? Are you trying to move an application like Cassandra, MongoDB, MariaDB, CouchDB from one cloud to the other? Come join us at the meetup and exchange views on these topics.

Speaker Bio: Jagadish Mukku has more than 18 years of product and technology experience with extensive experience in storage. Currently at robin.io as a Senior Software Architect, he architected, designed and implemented data management for stateful applications in kubernetes. In previous positions he worked at Violin systems as a software architect on data management software (deduplication, snapshots, thin-provisioning, replication) for an AFA (All Flash Array), worked at Veritas and Agami systems (NAS appliance startup). He holds a master’s degree in computational science from Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore.

Dhanashankar Venkatesan has worked in operating system kernels and storage stacks for the past 20 years. At present he is a senior storage architect in Robin.io where he designed and implemented data lifecycle operations and quality of service guarantees for storage volumes. He also worked extensively on storage performance and management. Before that he was a Staff Engineer in VMware where he worked on vSphere VMFS, software iSCSI initiator and virtual SCSI emulation.
