About this event

Welcome to our meetup for Kubernetes and Cloud Native Computing Louisville!

Starting from bare metal running Debian, run an ansible playbook and a few helm charts, get your own instance of GitLab to host your code and project management, your own Mattermost instance to host chat like Slack, and deploy a web app to your cluster, with GitLab automatically creating separate subdomains for different branches during development. Even deploying with chat commands. All on open-source software. Gotchas I've learned along the way--how NOT to upgrade your kubesprayed cluster. How to quickly tear the cluster down and set it back up again if you need to (and how to completely screw the server up with no hope of recovering remotely). How to make the builds go faster so you don't necessarily need to set up a local development environment for testing.

Agenda:

6:30 - 6:45 Social/Food
6:45 - 7:00 Updates/Open Forum
7:00 - 8:00 Dennis presentation
8:00 - 8.15 Social/Wrap-up

Speaker bio: Dennis Field

Dennis Field (gitlab.com/ftab, twitter.com/fury) is a software engineer, DevOps demonstrator, game maker, general wearer of many hats, and is graciously allowed to rent his apartment from his 3 cats--for now. He develops and runs infrastructure, apps, firmware, and many other things. Dennis works at Radio Sound, designer and manufacturer of OEM audio systems for powersports (motorcycles, UTVs, snowmobiles). Dennis is a minor contributor to open source projects such as Automotive Grade Linux and GitLab. Dennis works on UI design, embedded firmware, test automation, connectivity with iPod iPhone and Android, mobile apps that communicate with the audio system, and building and customizing embedded Linux. Built a bare metal Kubernetes cluster with his bare hands and uses it to deploy the website, firmware updates, GitLab CE, and other cloud native apps. In his spare time, not that he has much, he makes games, and attempts to catch fish.
