7:05 - Drew Oetzel (Tigera) - Kubernetes Networking Revealed & Network Policies For Security and Auditing Using Calico

Kubernetes networking plug-ins and frameworks are necessary and integral to running K8s. This talk will explain how the two most common frameworks: Flannel and Calico work underneath the hood. Once we understand these basics we can then show some best practices and solutions to common gotchas with the goal of increasing the speed and reliability of your Kubernetes networking plane.

Of course providing pod networking and facilitating service discovery are great! But open source Calico’s real super power is its ability to implement zero trust networking for security inside Kubernetes. The second part of this talk will show you the basics of setting up these policies. Equal emphasis will also be given to why implementing these types of security policies is so important to keeping our ever-expanding Kubernetes workloads secure.

Drew Oetzel is a Senior Solutions Engineer at Tigera and has been working with enterprise software since the late 90s. Focusing on his recent experience, he spent seven years at Splunk, honing his security skills. Two and a half years at Mesosphere, then Heptio mastering the art of distributed systems, containers, and all that goes along with them. Outside of tech ask him about history, gardening, or what he's doing to try to curb his Reddit addiction!
