About this event

Come join us for our first ever Kubernetes Austin Meetup at 6:30pm on Tuesday, September 29th at the Capital Factory!

We will have two great K8S-focused talks and provide free pizza and drinks to all attendees.

Talk #1: The first talk, by Rob Hirschfield, will discuss how Kubernetes works behind the scenes to make applications scale and upgrade with little effort. We will look at specific platform services and discuss alternatives in deploying Kubernetes. We will also discuss operational choices like software defined networking, Docker vs Rkt and operating systems. A Q & A will follow.

Bio: Rob Hirschfeld has been involved in OpenStack since the earliest days with a focus on ops and building the infrastructure that powers cloud and storage. He's also co-Chair of the Kubernetes Cluster Ops SIG and a four term OpenStack board member. The RackN team has deep knowledge of Kubernetes (we've been deploying it on clouds and metal), OpenStack (we created the Crowbar project) and cloud native architecture (we migrated Digital Rebar to be micro-services). Rob has deep ops knowledge of both platforms and experience with cloud-native migrations. He's also a regular speaker at OpenStack Summits about items including SDN, interop, and running Kubernetes. You can read more about Rob’s thoughts and positions regarding OpenStack and cloud on his blog: <a>http://RobHirschfeld.com.</a>;

Talk #2: The second talk, by Thomas Stephens, will cover how uStudio deploys production services into Kubernetes on AWS. Thomas writes: "We'll talk about our existing application infrastructure and deployment, why we're making the move to Kubernetes, and how we did it. We'll also discuss the features or tools we wish we had and some thoughts on how to get them. We're also excited to hear how other people are deploying Kubernetes 'in the wild.'"

Bio: Thomas Stephens is a Senior Software Developer at uStudio, where he enjoys working across the entire stack, from deployment to back-end services to UI and design. He has over 10 years experience in software development, working on everything from low level systems programming to desktop applications to distributed web applications, in languages as diverse as C, C++, C#, Java, Python, JavaScript and Clojure. Away from the computer, he enjoys photography, cooking, good beer and hanging out with his wife and son.
