About this event

Hello South Bay Kubernetes Enthusiasts!

I hope this month has been treating you splendidly! We have planned another great meetup for June, with two industry titans as speakers. This months meetup is happening on the 19th and is being hosted at the office of Rubrik .

Our first talk is by Jesse Suen and Mukulika Kapas from Intuit

Title: Get stuff done with container native workflows for Kubernetes

Abstract: Containers are fast becoming the preferred way to distribute and run applications and Kubernetes is becoming the default container orchestration engine. In this talk Mukulika and Jesse will walk through the concept and flexibility of a generic Kubernetes-native workflows and DAGs and how they can be used for CI/CD pipelines or complex, highly parallel ML and data processing pipelines. Mukulika will walk through the various components of open source Argo Project and its use cases whereas Jesse will deep dive into Argo architecture and demonstrate a few example workflows.

Bio: Jesse is a Principal Engineer at Intuit developing microservices-based, distributed applications for Kubernetes. He was an early engineer at Applatix (acquired by Intuit), building a platform to help users run containerized workloads in the public cloud. Prior to that, he was part of the engineering team at Tintri and Data Domain working on virtualized infrastructure, storage, tooling and automation. Jesse received his B.A. in Computer Science & Cognitive Science from UC Berkeley.

Mukulika is a Group Product Manager at Intuit leading its next generation SaaS platform built leveraging Kubernetes on AWS. At Applatix (acquired by Intuit), she helped launch the open source Argo project and managed the community activities. Prior to that she led product management at HPE building SaaS products around software quality. Mukulika received her B.S. in Computer Science & Engineering from India.

Our second talk is by Bill Plein from Diamanti. He is a Senior Solutions Architect.

Talk Title: Can You Really Build Database-as-a-Service on Kubernetes? (Of
Course You Can)

Abstract: Databases benefit greatly from containerization in terms of
performance, ease-of-deployment, and scalability. However, building
database-as-a-service (DBaaS) on Kubernetes can be a complex,
time-consuming project where some database services are run outside
of the cluster for the sake of leveraging persistent storage. In
this session, Diamanti cloud-native infrastructure expert Bill
Plein will talk about key infrastructure requirements of DBaaS, and
how storage and networking needs to be architected in order for
developers and application owners to build and manage
high-performing, stateful databases on Kubernetes.

Bio: Bill Plein has been a Solutions Architect for nearly twenty years, he has focused on the trends shaping the Enterprise, with the most recent being the rise of Flash Storage in the data center. The next and even bigger shift is to Cloud Native datacenter architectures.
