Join us for a night of Kubernetes (x3) – Joonas Berguis will give a talk on how DigitalOcean has evolved with Kubernetes, Ryan Koch will discuss the different ways he's learned to run Kubernetes on a budget, and Matt Tucker will show you how to streamline Kubernetes with Draft!
[6:00 - 6:30 PM] Dinner + Drinks
[6:30 - 7:00 PM] Kubernetes at DigitalOcean: Building a Platform for the Future (Joonas Bergius, Engineering Manager @ DigitalOcean)
Like in much of our industry today, DigitalOcean has been on a journey to evolve its monolithic architecture of the early days towards one made up of cloud-native micro services. This talk will provide an overview our journey from where we started to what our motivations were, share what we built and provide you with lessons we learned along the way. You can expect to take away examples and ideas of how you can make Kubernetes your own as the platform for the future reinforced by concrete examples of exactly how and what we have done at DigitalOcean.
Bio: Joonas is a curious technologist applying the best in class open source technologies to solving real world problems. He is currently an Engineering Manager at DigitalOcean where he has most recently built and led teams focused on building the DigitalOcean platform as well as customer facing compute services.

[7:15 - 7:45 PM] Kubernetes on a Shoestring Budget (Ryan Koch, Senior Systems Engineer @ Sauce Labs)
I have existed in the container space for several years now which we all know this is a very quickly evolving field. Throughout this journey I have needed a way to constantly be safely evaluate new technologies, paradigms, and pet projects without breaking the bank. This talk covers some of the ways I've done just that.
Bio: Ryan is a husband, father, and a lifelong learner. He has been involved in the field for the past 6 years, getting his start with a small town ISP. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with family, traveling, long-boarding, watching comedies, playing a myriad of instruments, appreciating the arts, and the taste of a good bourbon. He has always enjoyed solving a difficult problem, which has led him to this space.
[7:45 - 8:00 PM] Break
[8:00 - 8:30 PM] Streamlining Kubernetes with Draft (Matt Tucker, Software Engineer @ Microsoft ACS)
The Azure Container Services team recently released a new open source project, Draft, to help with streamlining development on top of Kubernetes. This will be a quick demo session showing how to setup and configure Draft and how it can help you deploy your application to a Kubernetes environment quickly and easily. Time permitting, we'll dig into what a Draft Pack is and how Draft's pluggable packs make it a very flexible system. Draft is built on top of Helm, so we'll be covering Helm Charts as well.
Bio: Matt Tucker is a Software Engineer at Microsoft working on the Azure Container Services team, making Kubernetes easier to use.
