In-person event
The CNCF Sustainability Week is an annual event organised by the CNCF Technical Advisory Group for Environmental Sustainability (TAG ENV) in collaboration with the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF). The event's main goal is to promote environmental sustainability in the cloud native industry and open source space.
Intro to TAG Environmental Sustainability (Nancy Chauhan)
Get to know about CNCF and Cloud Native Sustainability Week, to understand the mission and objectives of TAG Environmental Sustainability. Nancy will also shine a light on recent initiatives and emphasize the significance of environmental sustainability in today’s world. She will also explain how we can contribute as an individual to projects
Bio: Nancy Chauhan is an engineer with a passion for products, technology, and sustainability. As a CNCF Ambassador and Communications Chair for the TAG Environmental Sustainability Working Group, she leads the efforts for Sustainability Week. In her free time, Nancy also leads the Women in Cloud-Native community, empowering others to engage with cloud-native technologies and sustainability initiatives.
How NASA scientists and Navteca technologists use Cloud Native to collaborate on addressing climate change
Update: Aaron Skolnik from Navteca will be filling in for Ramon Ramirez-Linan tonight.
We will be joined by Shayna Solis and Aaron Skolnik from Navteca. Aaron will present on migrating NASA's High Performance Computing (HPC) workloads for scientific models from on-prem to the cloud, and the options this allows to track the carbon footprint—ultimately the challenge of allowing scientists to analyze and experiment with Earth Science data to study climate change, without further contributing to climate change. Shayna will show some climate change-related work Navteca has created in close collaboration with NASA, including sea level and extreme weather modeling, simulation and training tools.
Bios:
Shayna Solis is co-founder, CEO, and creative mastermind of Navteca (https://www.navteca.com), a technology company that has been pioneering the use of immersive, interactive technologies for Earth science, working closely with NASA and others to push the boundaries of data visualization and knowledge sharing using game engines, conversational AI, and open science platforms. Shayna also founded the non-profit organization, Climate Warrior Collective, to raise awareness about climate change and make caring about the Earth more modern and relevant to diverse populations.
Aaron Skolnik has been with Navteca since 2017 having had a wide-ranging career in federal service, including as the Technical Operations Manager in the FEMA Office of External Affairs. He now leads a team of developers and engineers for NASA's Science Managed Cloud Environment (SMCE) helping scientists across the agency and exteral stakeholders to accelerate science by providing cloud-based infrastructure and platform solutions.

Towards Sustainable Cloud Security: A DevSecOps Practicioner's Suggestion
In this talk, a DevSecOps practitioner shares insights on how industries can address both security and sustainability challenges in the cloud. Drawing from real-world examples, the speaker discusses practical security issues that organizations commonly face, including misconfigurations, compliance pitfalls, and cloud resource inefficiencies. While not positioning himself as an expert, the speaker offers thoughtful suggestions on how DevSecOps practices can foster a balance between robust security and environmental sustainability. Topics include improving cloud resource management to reduce carbon footprints, automating security practices, and creating more eco-friendly security solutions.
The aim is to inspire a dialogue on sustainable cloud security practices, empowering practitioners to adopt both secure and environmentally conscious approaches.
