In-person event

About this event

Kubernauts!

We are excited to announce the next San Francisco Kubernetes meetup will be August 22, 2017 at Google Launchpad in San Francisco.

If you want to speak or do a 5-min lightning demo, please ping me over meetup or twitter (@baldwinmathew)

Agenda:

6:30 - 7:00 - Social Mixer

7:00 - 7:30 - Karthik Prabhakar - The Istio Service Mesh and it's Value to Kubernetes Networking

A service mesh can provide Kubernetes deployments with application-level policy, security/identity and content routing, and facilitate canary/A-B deployments, tracing, monitoring and other services transparent to applications. We introduce Istio, the newest service mesh for Kubenetes that has gained a lot of fans since it was announced in late May, and describe how it complements other K8s network concepts (like CNI plugins and network policy), leveraging the Envoy proxy developed at Lyft. With Calico (https://projectcalico.org/) as the network plugin and network policy implementation, and Istio (https://istio.io/) as the service mesh, we will demonstrate how within a few minutes one can provision a feature-rich Kubernetes cluster and deploy/manage/secure microservice applications.

7:30 - 8:00 - Zack Butcher - Istio Mixer Deep Dive

We dive in to the Istio Mixer, Istio's engine for applying policy, generating telemetry, and the extensibility point for teams using Istio. We'll cover how Istio proxies communicate with Mixer, how data from Istio proxies and the environment are used to make policy decisions and generate telemetry, and how Mixer can be extended to add your logic to the Istio mesh.

8:00 - 8:20 - Lightning Talks

8:30 - Wrap-Up
