Soam Vasani (@soamv) is a software engineer at Platform9 Systems Inc, where he works on Fission and Kubernetes.  In the past he's worked at VMware on a new distributed filesystem, and on infrastructure management stuff.  Before that, he spent some time hacking on the GNU debugger.  He's interested in programming languages, tools and frameworks, and in distributed systems.

Fission is a framework for Functions-as-a-Service or "serverless" functions on Kubernetes.

Users create a function and map an HTTP route to it.  When an HTTP request is made to the route, the function is loaded into a container and run.  The container is cached for a while, to make subsequent requests faster.  Fission maintains a pool of containers to make the "cold start" very fast (on order of about 100 msec).

Fission is implemented in Go and supports NodeJS and Python today; it's extensible to any language.

Being based on Kubernetes allows Fission functions to interoperate seamlessly with regular microservices.  Running in Kubernetes pods also allows the user to continue using existing tools for monitoring, log aggregation etc. with fission functions.

Priyanka Sharma (@pritianka) is an entrepreneur with a passion for building developer products and growing them through open source communities. She heads Marketing and Partnerships at LightStep and also works on the OpenTracing project, an instrumentation standard for distributed tracing. In her copious spare time she advises startups at HeavyBit industries, an accelerator for developer products. Priyanka cofounded WakaTime, an open source time-tracker for developers and holds a BA in Political Science from Stanford University.
