Abstract:

Many new data centers today build IP fabrics using simple layer 3 networks because of their cost, simplicity, reliability and predictable performance. OpenStack runs on these networks, but will often also manage a VXLAN overlay network for tenant isolation. Many OpenStack operators also deploy 'Provider Networks', which are pre-existing data center VLANs that instances can attach to directly. When deployed as VLANs, Provider Networks suffer from the well-known performance and fault isolation problems of large layer 2 networks.

Routed Provider Networks are a new experimental OpenStack feature that lets operators avoid these problems by building layer 3 Provider Networks on IP fabrics. This new capability lets VMs attach directly to the layer 3 network.

IP fabrics in the data center also require new network technology such as BGP to control the network. These new layer 3 networks also affect how high-availability and endpoint discovery can be implemented without traditional layer 2 networking. Networked storage, in particular, frequently relies on layer 2 networking.

At this Meetup, Chris Marino will review OpenStack Routed Provider Networks and show how they can be implemented using Romana, an open source network and security automation solution.  Bill Borsari will also describe some of the challenges to deploying storage on layer 3 networks and how Datera is bringing enterprise-class high-performance block storage to IP fabrics with native BGP support.

Speakers:
Chris Marino, co-founder of Pani Networks, the sponsor of the Romana project.
Bill Borsari, Director of System Engineering.
