Abstract: Metrics are essential for operating an OpenStack production cloud efficiently. Purely-technical metrics (benchmarks, logging/monitoring/alerting, etc.) are great for figuring out what your OpenStack cluster(s) are doing, optimizing performance and resolving problems. Billing solutions — another form of metrics, though not usually considered as such — provide a different viewpoint: one that pays attention to actual costs incurred by operations, configurations, usage patterns, and policies.

At this MeetUp, Sanjay Mishra, CTO of Talligent, and Evgeniya Shumakher, Sr. Manager of Technology Partnerships and Alliances for Mirantis, will offer some tested best-practices for using billing as an Ops tool: for capacity management, planning, process optimization, peer-group studies and other operations management tasks. Sanjay and Evgeniya will discuss:

● Using billing to manage OpenStack capacity
● Keeping your OpenStack cloud cost-competitive (tracking usage, utilization, growth, and costs against benchmarks)
● Picking the right billing metrics to track a production private OpenStack cloud

They’ll also demonstrate using OpenStack project Fuel — an open source, pluggable web-or-CLI-accessible deployment automation tool — to configure and provision a new OpenStack cluster along with a leading billing and analytics solution, Talligent OpenBook v3. Talligent wrote a simple Fuel plugin to enable robust deployment of their solution with OpenStack in a validated reference configuration, interoperability-tested with other integrated technologies and products.
