Platforms and Platform Engineering are the new buzzword du jour. But just like agile, DevOps and Observability, there are some really key concepts that deserve to be explored and applied. Together we will look beyond the definition of platform engineering to interrogate the outcomes promised by platforms and what that means in practice. "Platforms" and "Platform Engineering" have become the latest buzzwords in the tech world, much like how terms such as Agile, DevOps, and Observability once captivated the industry. However, just like those movements, there are core concepts in platform engineering that go far beyond the hype and are worthy of deeper exploration and practical application. In this session, we will go beyond the surface-level definitions of platform engineering and examine the real outcomes that platforms are designed to deliver, along with their practical implications for organisations.
We will begin by breaking down what platform engineering truly means, challenging common assumptions, and discussing how it differs from other technological trends. A significant focus will be on the outcomes that platforms promise—such as improved developer productivity, streamlined operations, and enhanced user experiences—and how these outcomes can be achieved effectively through a well-thought-out platform strategy.
The session will also feature a deep dive into the “as-a-Service” model, particularly within the context of platform engineering. We will explore how delivering internal services to teams—whether it's infrastructure, software, or operational tools—has become the backbone of a "Platform as a Product" approach. This model views internal platforms not as static tools, but as evolving products that serve the needs of internal customers (such as developers and operators). By adopting this mindset, organisations can create platforms that are user-centric, scalable, and capable of driving innovation from within.
