Sessions

Talk 1: Juliano Costa - Getting Started with OpenTelemetry:

OTel Demo to the Rescue

Abstract:

OpenTelemetry is a powerful and flexible open-source observability framework that enables developers to capture, generate, collect, and export telemetry data such as traces, metrics, and logs from their applications. With the growing complexity of modern software systems, having good observability is essential for developers to diagnose and fix issues, improve performance, and enhance the overall user experience. However, getting started with OpenTelemetry can be daunting for developers who are new to the framework. In this talk, Juliano will share tips and best practices for overcoming the initial challenges of implementing OpenTelemetry, using the OpenTelemetry Demo as a guide. The demo provides a comprehensive overview of how to use OpenTelemetry with almost all supported programming languages. Attendees will learn how to generate traces and metrics using both auto and manual instrumentation, how and why to use the Collector, and how to send the collected data to open-source tools. By the end of this talk, attendees will have a clear understanding of how to implement OpenTelemetry in their applications, and how it can provide significant benefits, such as better debugging, and enhanced developer experience. Join us to learn how to make the most of OpenTelemetry and take your observability to the next level.

Bio:

Juliano Costa is a software engineer/developer advocate born and raised in Brazil who loves learning new things. In the last couple of years he has put his efforts into cloud technologies and got super excited about it, which made him start a Cloud Native Community Group together with a colleague in Linz (Austria), where he lives now. Besides that he is also a maintainer of the OpenTelemetry Demo. When he is not working with k8s and OpenTelemetry, he is probably spending some time with his wife and his newly deployed baby.

Talk 2: Vincenzo Sessa - Transitioning a High-Volume API Management and IDP to Azure APIM and AAD B2C

Abstract:

In the ever-evolving landscape of digital services, scalability and security are paramount, especially for platforms handling millions of users and hundreds of millions of API calls. This talk delves into the intricate journey of migrating a large-scale API management and Identity Provider service, catering to over 1 million users and managing 300 million monthly API calls, to Microsoft Azure's API Management and Azure Active Directory B2C services. We will explore the challenges faced in this massive effort, focusing on maintaining uninterrupted service and ensuring data integrity during the migration. The discussion will cover the strategy devised for a seamless transition. This session is tailored for cloud architects and will provide valuable insights for those considering or in the process of migrating large-scale services to cloud-native solutions.

Talk 3: Sebastian Poxhofer - Building a developer portal the OpenSource way: an introduction to Backstage

Abstract:

Join this to talk to learn about an incubating CNCF project which is at the heart of the current Platform Engineering craze, Backstage.

Learn how to bootstrap a customizable developer portal with plugins which allow you to streamline workflows, enhance collaboration, and centralize the software development lifecycle.
