In-person event

About this event

Please wait at the Robert Noyce Building (RNB) lobby before 7:00 pm (lobby closes at 7:00), also come early and secure seats we are going to be pushing full capacity.

Agenda:

6:30-7:00- Food and networking

7:00-7:10- Introductions and Overview for the evening

7:10 -8:30- RDT and gRPC for SDI/NFV and Service function chaining

8:30-9:00- Q/A and Open Discussion

Network Functions Virtualization ( NFV ) and Service Function Chaining ( SFC ) have moved from idea to POC to implementation stage . The challenge still remains to get bare metal performance from  virtual machines . Resource Director Technology (RDT) from Intel is designed to bring in QoS to the virtual machine resources. gRPC from Google is a framework which could be used to design priority based services .This talk introduces these technologies and explores the idea of more reliable and efficient services via gRPC enhanced with RDT

gRPC could be used to connect distributed systems in any environment: hybrid, private or public clouds such as Openstack.  It is a scalable and efficient protocol for distributed services to communicate over standards based transport like http2. Hence, it could be used for vendor neutral VM communication for cloud ready NFV. There has been a Network consortium initiative to adopt gRPC for SDN common communication API.

RDT also has obvious implementation in OpenStack NFV in terms of ensuring QoS for virtual machines. Same QoS mechanisms could be applied to commodity hardware based white box switches  used in SDN.
